What is Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty, commonly called a
nose job, involves reshaping the structure of the nose to change either the appearance or the function. Rhinoplasty is usually performed under general anesthesia by either a Plastic Surgeon or an Otolaryngologist / Facial Plastic Surgeon.
Common reasons that patients undergo a cosmetic rhinoplasty include to: straigthen a crooked nose, remove a hump from the bridge, reshape the tip, shorten a long nose, lengthen a short nose, and to turn the nose up or down. Nose surgery can also be performed to improve the function of the nose and to correct breathing problems related to: a deviated septum, nostril collapse, or nasal blockage.
Types of Rhinoplasty
There are several types of rhinoplasty. These include
primary rhinoplasty (first-time nasal surgery) and
secondary rhinoplasty (revision nasal surgery). Rhinoplasty is generally considered a cosmetic surgery procedure. Nose job techniques can be used for functional rhinoplasty, which is nasal surgery performed strictly to improve breathing problems. Sometimes, a nose job is performed for both cosmetic and functional reasons. This is often termed a
septorhinoplasty.
Open vs Closed Rhinoplasty?
Nose job surgery can sometimes be performed entirely through incisions made on the inside of the nose This type of rhinoplasty approach is called
closed rhinoplasty and does not leave any external scars. The surgeon reshapes the structure of the nose beneath the skin to give it a new appearance.
More complex nasal deformities can require an
open rhinoplasty, in which the internal incisions are connected with an incision across the column of tissue that separates the nostrils. This allows the surgeon to directly access the nasal framework and make precise changes to structure under direct visualization. At the end of the surgery, the internal and external incisions are closed, and the scar is virtually imperceivable once healing has occured. The approach used for your rhinoplasty will depend on both your nasal characteristics and your surgeon's surgical experience.
Is Rhinoplasty Right For You?
Rhinoplasty can be performed to correct many different features of the nose. Sometimes it is possible to correct one isolated problem - such as removing a hump from the bridge. Othertimes, it may be necessary to correct more than one area of the nose in order for the nose to look natural and to remain in proportion with the other facial features. Visit our
